MMP Profile: Nadine Nakanishi
Middle Mind Project does these great profiles and they recently talked to Nadine Nakanishi, one-half of Sonnenzimmer Studio, based in Chicago. She’s pretty awesome, but have a look for yourself:

David Pino, an Amsterdam based graphic designer and lead singer of El Pino & the Volunteers dropped a line to let us know about their new music video. You might enjoy this video if you’re a fan of 3D typography. I’m pretty impressed with the set production…must have taken a while to get all those letters to hang perfectly.
An impressive animation combing inkjet graphics with watercolor and ink treatments for an 1m 30s abstraction. Direction and animation by Benjamin Ducroz, sound by Samuel Acres.

“Sympathetic Resonance”
2009 dimensions vary african padauk, birch veneer plywood, aluminum, yarn mallets, rotary solenoids, brass, wires, magnets, boot lace, electronic components
Sympathetic Resonance is an interactive musical instrument sculpture that utilizes the keys of a marimba (a mallet-percussion instrument of african origin) to create four and a half playable octaves. The sculpture consists of 56 “units,” each containing a different note, as well as a yarn-wound mallet affixed to a rotary solenoid which allows the note to be triggered by a touch-sensitive aluminum keyboard played by the viewer. The sculpture’s modular design allows it to completely change configuration from installation to installation. Each unit can be either mounted or placed on the floor or mounted to a wall, and can be connected to the keyboard with a wire of any length.

“The vinyl is dead. Good. Now listen to the beautiful noise of the earth.”
Harvest (2009) is a new art piece for the new instrument terrafon, traditional ensemble and cropland – by Olle Cornéer and Martin Lübcke.
In this performance Alunda Church Choir, conducted by Cantor Jan Hällgren, plays the soil of northern Uppland (in Sweden) on terrafon. Harvest by Alunda Kyrkokör was exhibited at the Volt Festival in Uppsala the 6th of June 2009. Terrafon is a large agricultural version of the horn gramophone, amplifying the sounds in the track it ploughs.
There is more to come. There are still many croplands still untouched by terrafon. The only thing needed is a powerful local musical ensemble that can sweat it out. This is indeed a demanding piece.

I posted about Nicole’s work before, and I recently learned more about her process. She freezes paint and then her pieces are created as the ice melts.
